1881 throws a lot at once: mimosa, iris, rose, freesia, violet, lily-of-the-valley and jasmine all show up before the heart even starts, and the result is a thick, powdery floral that can feel more like a cloud than a composition to noses used to something sparer.
It's an old-school way of building a fragrance, closer to a vintage powder box than to the clean, single-note florals common in newer releases. Chamomile and galbanum bring a green, herbal edge into the heart that cuts some of the sweetness, and narcissus and orange blossom deepen it further before tuberose adds a heavier, more indolic floral note.
Sandalwood, cedar and amber turn the base warm and woody, with musk and vanilla smoothing the powder into a soft finish. It stays put on skin, and the sillage holds as a small halo that stays with the body.
It fits best on mild spring days, though it carries reasonably well into fall, and it suits daytime far more than evening. Fans of classic, powdery florals will get plenty to enjoy in all that density, while anyone who finds iris and violet cloying in large doses is better served by something simpler.
