Our take

No 19 Parfum is green the way a gale hits a cliffside garden, all jolting galbanum and bitter, electric neroli. It opens as a slap of resinous leaf and cold earth, not remotely sweet, before the irises and narcissus arrive like pinpricks of pale light through a gray sky. The heart is a tense bouquet: May rose pulled taut by hedione’s metallic shimmer, jasmine kept in check, ylang-ylang barely audible. You never get a full floral bloom. Instead, the orris root dusts everything with a chalky, almost old-library iris powder, while oakmoss and vetiver anchor it in damp wood and mossy stone. The parfum wears close, with sillage that hovers just at arm’s length and longevity that fades after five hours, which feels right for something this austere. It is utterly natural, unapologetically sharp, and sits squarely in a niche of its own making, even if the bottle says Chanel. This is not a fragrance for anyone chasing compliments or soft sweetness. It suits the person who dresses for themselves, who finds comfort in rain-slicked sidewalks and the silence of a winter garden. Wear it to a morning meeting in early spring or alone on a brisk afternoon. Who should skip it? Anyone who expects jasmine to be lush, or who thinks green should mean innocent. No 19 never apologizes, and that is its only luxury.
