Our take

The aldehydes at the top of No 5 give it a powdery sparkle right away, paired with ylang-ylang, neroli, bergamot and a soft peach that adds warmth against that sparkle without dulling it.

Iris, jasmine, rose and lily-of-the-valley form a dense floral heart, more abstract bouquet than any single flower standing out on its own, and the base of sandalwood, oakmoss, vanilla, patchouli and vetiver gives it an earthy, woody finish that feels more serious than sweet, closer to a fine powder than a bouquet of fresh blooms.

This one sticks around for a long stretch and projects as a modest bubble, close enough to notice but not overwhelming a room full of people. It leans toward the colder months, yet it suits both a desk in daylight and a dinner in the evening without feeling wrong in either place.

Anyone curious about aldehydic florals should try this before writing off the whole category as dated or old-fashioned. Wearers who prefer transparent, single-note fragrances will find the density here a lot to take in at first, and likely for quite a while after that too.
