Our take

Egoiste wants a cold night and a coat with some weight to it. Cinnamon and damask rose open warm and a little sharp, and mahogany sits underneath like a piece of dark furniture, not a note in a bottle. Carnation gives the rose a peppery edge so it never settles into a simple bouquet.

Sandalwood, tobacco and amber take over once the coriander and mandarin from the opening burn off, and the whole thing keeps its shape for a long stretch after that. Cinnamon keeps resurfacing throughout the wear, never really burning off the way the top notes did. Ambrette softens the base into something powdery, and the leather stays present without ever turning sharp or aggressive. Around the wearer it holds a small halo, warmth a colleague only picks up on when they lean in to talk.

It belongs to fall and winter evenings more than a bright afternoon, when wool and low light let the tobacco and vanilla read as grounding instead of heavy. The rose never disappears, even under all that wood and spice, and that pairing is really the whole appeal of the fragrance. Men who normally avoid rose because it reads too sweet or feminine on them will likely find Egoiste changes their mind, since here the flower never gets to be delicate.
