Our take

Asphalt Rainbow belongs on a city sidewalk after a rain shower, not in a climate-controlled boutique. The litchi and magnolia bring a juicy, petal-heavy brightness that mirrors sunlight hitting wet pavement. Galbanum and patchouli ground that fruit with a bitter green edge, while saffron threads through the florals to keep the sweetness from becoming a simple fruit salad. Rose and lily-of-the-valley add classic elegance, but the leather and labdanum ensure the blend never floats away into pure prettiness.

The asphalt accord gives the entire composition a gritty, mineral texture that clings to the skin with a steady, middle-ground presence. It does not shout across a crowded plaza, but it stays close enough that you catch it when you move your arm or brush past a railing. Ylang-ylang and amber round out the scent with a warm, slightly powdery softness that keeps the industrial note from feeling cold or harsh.

Cecile Hua composed a fragrance for people who want their flowers with a bit of street dirt under the fingernails. The wearer who enjoys a scent that feels alive in the open air will find a companion here. It suits a walk through a park when the trees are dripping and the concrete is dark with water. A garden growing through a crack in the cement.
