A man leans against the brick wall just outside the door, hands in his pockets, letting the cool air settle around him. The opening arrives with a sharp bite of black pepper and cardamom, bright enough to cut through the damp night. Palisander rosewood adds a polished, slightly rosy edge to the spice, giving the first impression a refined sharpness that feels intentional rather than aggressive.
As the evening continues, the heart reveals sandalwood and vetiver. The sandalwood is creamy and dense, wrapping around the earlier spice and softening every edge. Vetiver brings a clean, earthy root quality that keeps the wood from feeling too smooth. The base slowly takes over, and this is where Bastione lives most fully. Tonka bean and vanilla create a rounded, sweet warmth, while ambergris adds a mineral, slightly salty depth that stops the sweetness from becoming flat. It is a rich, balsamic blanket of scent that feels heavy in the best way.
The composition is undeniably powdery, and that is where it stumbles. The drydown leans into an old-fashioned softness that can feel dated against the modern, sharp opening. For anyone who prefers a crisp, transparent finish, this turns dusty. The vanilla and tonka bean combination eventually smothers the beautiful vetiver and pepper that started the night, leaving a scent that is more grandfather than guardian.
