Our take

You think you know green, and then Digitalis slithers in like a wet cucumber slice dropped on a bed of moss and church incense. The opening is a shock of ozonic air so cold it stings, cut with the acidic snap of violet leaf and galbanum. David Apel has conjured a greenhouse after a thunderstorm, the glass panes still dripping and the crushed basil on your fingers mixing with wet soil. The heart blooms with a pale violet and gentiana bitterness, while coriander and pepper add a nervous, herbal electricity. As it dries, the florals retreat into a dusty iris and a wisp of incense, with the moss and fern anchoring everything to the ground.

This is not a friendly walk in the park. It is the damp, shadowed corner of an abandoned botanical garden where the sprinklers have been left running. The aquatic and aromatic accords are so vivid they feel almost synthetic, like a memory of rain rather than rain itself. The longevity and sillage are modest, hovering around a polite three out of five. You will need to reapply, and you will not announce your arrival from across the room.

Digitalis suits the person who wants to smell like an ambiguous, elegant dampness rather than a sunny citrus. Skip it if you crave sweetness or warmth. Wear it on a humid spring morning or a cool summer evening, when the air already smells of chlorophyll and concrete drying. The only question: Are you ready to smell that clean, that strange?
