Saks New York Oud opens with a sharp, medicinal edge that some will find abrasive. The saffron and nutmeg hit hard, and the bergamot does little to soften that initial bite. This is not a gentle introduction, and it demands patience from the wearer during those first few minutes.
This fragrance is for the person who wants to feel armored in a city crowd. The argument for this is in the heavy base, where oud and amber create a resinous, nearly impenetrable shield. The jasmine and palisander rosewood in the heart try to lift the composition, but they are quickly pulled back down into the dark, powdery musk. It is a scent that feels at home in a heavy wool coat, walking past wet pavement under a gray sky when the air has a bite to it. The vanilla adds a creamy roundness, but it never lets the scent become truly sweet or approachable.
