Does Parfum de Luxe deliver the weight of a real vintage oriental without feeling like a museum piece? Dawn Spencer Hurwitz builds the entrance with violet and bergamot, softened by clary sage and petitgrain. The herbs keep the citrus from feeling sharp, and the violet leans powdery rather than candied. It is a polite opening that steps aside quickly for what follows.
The heart gathers white honey, rose, iris, tuberose, ylang-ylang, and geranium into a dense floral weave. The honey binds the petals together so the tuberose does not dominate, while iris adds a fine dust that settles over the sweetness. In the base, amber, French labdanum, oakmoss, tobacco, benzoin, patchouli, sandalwood, and vanilla create a warm, earthy foundation. The tobacco and oakmoss pull the resinous woods toward a dim, wood-paneled room where a lit cigarette rests in a crystal ashtray and the air is thick with resin.
