Our take

Brooklyn by Gallivant opens with a brisk squeeze of citrus, orange and lemon and bergamot all vying for attention like a morning rush on the subway platform. It is bright and immediate, almost aggressively fresh, but within minutes the sharpness softens as magnolia and orris root drift in, adding a powdered, floral whisper that feels less like a flower market and more like a worn leather satchel dusted with face powder. The dry down settles into a warm, musky amber with a touch of benzoin and white woods, a comfort that never quite forgets its citrus origins. This is not a loud fragrance; it wears like a favorite linen shirt, clean but lived in, with a soft, skin-hugging presence. Longevity is modest at best, barely carrying past three hours, and sillage is so close that only a hug will reveal it. That makes it perfect for a sun-drenched afternoon in Prospect Park or a late morning coffee run, but skip it if you need a scent to last through dinner. The overall character reminds me of a Polaroid of a stoop sale, faded edges, a little nostalgic, slightly melancholic, but still smiling. Is it worth the hunt for a springtime staple? For the price of a nice brunch, yes, but expect to reapply. It suits the understated dresser, the one who prefers a whisper over a shout.
