Double Step opens with a sharp synthetic edge that never fully disappears. The pineapple and apple notes feel candied rather than fresh, and the bergamot lacks the brightness found in higher quality compositions. This artificial quality persists through the entire wear, making the fragrance feel like a budget interpretation of a popular style rather than a confident original.
The heart introduces birch and patchouli alongside rose and jasmine. The birch brings a leathery smokiness that aligns with the accord list, but the floral elements sit awkwardly on top of the sweet fruit. Patchouli adds an earthy depth, though it struggles to ground the composition because the sweetness remains so dominant.
Ambergris, musk, oakmoss, and vanilla form a base that is heavy on amber and musk. The vanilla amplifies the sugary opening rather than smoothing it, and the oakmoss gets lost in the mix. The overall impression is fruity, sweet, and musky with leather and smoke trying to break through without success.
