Monkey

Character
A folding table sits near the edge of a garden path where sunlight falls through branches that have not fully filled in yet. Someone has sliced a blood orange and left the bright segments beside a small glass of cold water. Monkey lives in that immediate radius. The juice is sharp and vivid, the peel oily and fresh, and a few currants have rolled onto the wooden slats, dark and a little tart. Marigold grows nearby in a clay pot, its petals giving off a clean, slightly peppery air that keeps the fruit from feeling like a bowl at a market stall. A breeze moves through the space and carries a warm thread of cedar from a bench that has seen years of weather. The air feels articulate and unhurried, composed of things that grow and things that were built, all sharing the same patch of ground while the light stays bright enough to make every surface look
new, the kind of morning that does not ask to be explained, just occupied, with a scent that stays close to the hands that poured the water and arranged the fruit, moving only as far as the next step along the path where the soil still holds the cool of an earlier hour and the flowers are just beginning to open their faces to the warmth that is building steadily above the rooftops
