Our take

Yohji Yamamoto’s eponymous scent opens with a brisk slap of cypress and nutmeg – green, peppery, and immediately architectural. The bergamot flickers like a pale winter sun, sharp but short-lived. Then freesia and jasmine step in not as a lush bouquet but as a dry, almost metallic whisper; this is a floral that has been starched and pressed flat. The base of sandalwood and musk settles into a soft, powdery hush that clings close to the skin. Picture a cashmere scarf left on a park bench in November – elegant, slightly melancholy, and utterly self-contained.

This is a chypre that never quite spills over into full-bodied glamour. The longevity is polite (3.69), the sillage discreet (3.28), which makes it ideal for a train ride or a gallery opening where you want to be noticed only by those who step close enough. It leans synthetic in the drydown, a clean, almost cosmetic musk that saves it from being too mossy or dour.

Who should wear it? Anyone with a wardrobe built on charcoal and unstructured wool. Skip it if you want a sillage bomb or a honeyed floral that announces itself from across the room. It’s best in fall and winter, and relentlessly daytime – you could wear it to sleep, really, it’s that soft. The 3.89 rating feels right: a solid, unsentimental composition that never tries to be your best friend.
