Our take

A wide stone terrace sits under a bright sky, the air warm and moving. Someone has just sliced into a ripe melon and set the plate beside a bowl of mandarin oranges and lime wedges. The juice hits the air at once, sharp and clean, with bergamot and grapefruit adding a bitter edge that keeps the fruit from turning sugary. Nearby, a handful of fresh mint and cracked pepper sit on a wooden board next to crushed cardamom pods and star anise. The scent drifts through the space in layers, the jasmine and neroli giving the fruit a soft white floral lift while iris and geranium add a dry, powdered touch. Apple and black currant round out the heart with a gentle sweetness that never becomes heavy.

The base settles into a mix of Haitian vetiver, patchouli, and sandalwood, with frankincense and labdanum lending a resinous, amber warmth. Tobacco and musk sit low in the air, earthy and aromatic. The composition carries a lot of moving parts, and that is where it stumbles. The heart is crowded with fourteen notes, and the result is a little unfocused, with the spices and florals competing instead of supporting each other. The melon and apple can feel out of place against the darker base, creating a gap in the middle that the fragrance never quite bridges.
