About the house
Accounts of who started Armaf differ. Marie Claire Spain names Hassan Naeem as the founder and dates the founding to 1999 in the UAE. A coupon-guide profile and Marie Claire both say the company began as a maker of perfume bottles for designer brands in the Middle East. Sterling's own timeline, as quoted on a Lazada brand page, gives 2010 as the official launch year and describes the first range as French-inspired luxury scents. Marie Claire adds that the first fragrance sold under the Armaf name was Tag Him, in 2015.
The house's own About page points to a different origin. It says the Fakhruddin family planted the seed of Sterling Perfumes Industry in manufacturing, and that the group's journey began long before it took shape. Khaleej Times says Sterling Perfumes was created in 1998 in Dubai and started as a contract manufacturer before launching brands of its own. Sterling operates under Fakhruddin Holdings, which Khaleej Times says Fakhruddin Ebrahimji started in 1963. A Gulf News advertiser feature lists Dr Ali Asgar Fakhruddin as CEO and Chairman and Hamza Fakhruddin as Managing Partner, and calls Armaf the crown jewel among Sterling's brands.
Sterling says it produces around 250,000 pieces a day. It reports selling in 92+ countries on its own site, while a 2023 Gulf News interview has the company saying over 120. Khaleej Times calls its UAE plant the only UV metalising plant in the country.
Khaleej Times says Oros by Armaf launched in November 2013, made with French connoisseurs in association with Swarovski. Armaf says it has taken part in Beautyworld Middle East since 2013. The house says the success of Club de Nuit Intense and Sillage led to three further fragrances, among them Untold and Imperial. At the 2022 Beautyworld Middle East Awards in Dubai, where Armaf was a Platinum Sponsor, Club de Nuit Intense Man won Consumer Fragrance of the Year on 31 October. Marie Claire put the catalogue at nearly 300 references by 2025, and Sterling marked its 25th anniversary in 2023 with what it called the world's largest perfume wall.
