About the house
Natura Cosméticos was founded in 1969 in São Paulo by Antônio Luiz Seabra. The company's own timeline places its first store on Rua Oscar Freire in the same city. In 1974 it adopted direct sales as its business model.
Its first move beyond home came in 2005, when it opened a store in Paris. Natura's own timeline then lists a run of ownership events. It says the company took the remaining 35% of Aesop in 2016, and sources differ on when the first part of that purchase happened. The Body Shop joined in 2017. In 2014 the company had already described itself as the first publicly traded B Corporation. Aesop and The Body Shop were both sold in 2023.
The same timeline dates the Ekos line to 2000. A Natura spokesperson told Trellis that the company has been operating with the Amazon for 20 years.
On the fragrance side, Osmoz's history note says the duo Essencial came out in 1995 and were the first Brazilian eaux de parfum, while Osmoz's own perfume page carries a date of 2006. Osmoz credits the perfumer as Thierry Bessard of Givaudan, though another Osmoz page names Véronique Dupont. Osmoz also describes Kaiak as a best-seller of Brazilian perfumery, and lists Ekos Breu Branco and Priprioca under the Natura name.
