About the house
Zara was established in 1975 by Amancio Ortega Gaona and Rosalía Mera Goyenechea. Their first shop was in central A Coruña, in Galicia, Spain, and the company is still based there. The first shop outside Spain opened in 1988 in Porto, Portugal.
Perfume Intelligence describes Zara as Europe's largest clothing retailer. Inditex, which owns it, was founded in A Coruña on 12 June 1985 as a holding company for Zara and its manufacturing plants. It listed on the Bolsa de Madrid in 2001, when the offering sold 26 percent of the company to public investors. Ortega remains the majority owner through his investment vehicle Pontegadea, though sources differ on the exact share, with figures between about 50 and 59 percent.
Sources also differ by a year on when the perfumes began. Perfume Intelligence's directory says they were launched in association with Antonio Puig Parfums, starting in 1998, while El Universo gives 1999 for the first edition. By 2023 that article counts more than 800 fragrances in the catalogue.
The same article lists 22 collaborators on the line, among them Mylène Alran, Jordi Fernández, Alberto Morillas, Carlos Benaim, Jo Malone and the company Puig.
