Our take

Donna Karan’s Chaos opens with a sharp, almost electric snap of coriander, green and citrus-tinged, before a fistful of sage smoke softens the blow. The spices here don’t roar; they simmer, turning powdery and warm as the heart settles into a bed of exotic woods that smell less like a lumberyard and more like the splintered arm of a sun-worn chair in a Moroccan courtyard. It’s an aromatic woody affair, leaning soft spicy rather than incensy, with a drydown that stays close to the skin and feels thoroughly natural, herbal rather than synthetic. Longevity clocks in around three to four hours, and sillage is intimate, which makes this less a grand entrance and more a quiet imprint. Fall owns this fragrance, with winter as a capable understudy (think wool scarves and grey afternoons), but don’t let the spring and summer votes fool you: this is not a hot-weather scent. It suits someone who wants complexity without handholding, a coriander-sage tangle that refuses to shout. Skip it if you crave bombastic projection or sugary sweetness. Wear it to a bookshop in November, or a dinner where conversation matters more than cocktail hour. One question lingers: why did Donna Karan let this one slip into obscurity?
