This is patchouli stripped of all pretense, a straight shot of the root itself, dark and damp and unapologetically bitter. Santa Maria Novella does not sweeten the leaf or dress it in vanilla. The opening is a green-brown slap, medicinal and sharp, like an apothecary cabinet left open in a rainstorm. It settles slowly, letting woody, balsamic warmth rise from the earthiness, a dry peppery heat that has nothing to do with sugar. The drydown is a dusty whisper of resin and soil, closer to the skin than you might expect. Longevity is moderate, about four to five hours, and sillage stays polite. This fragrance is like a leather journal that has been buried in a garden and then dug up, its pages stained with age and moss.
It feels natural in a way that modern patchoulis rarely manage, lean and uncompromising. You wear it for yourself, not for the room. It suits the person who wants to smell like a concept rather than a crowd pleaser, someone who finds comfort in dirt and time. Skip it if you expect fluff or sweetness, because you will find none here. Fall and winter are its true seasons, when the cold air can carry its weight without turning cloying.
