Chypre
Fragrance notes
Character
Chypre by Franck Boclet opens with a bright, almost sticky burst of orange blossom and bergamot, the cardamom adding a warm, dusty greenness that keeps the citrus from feeling like a spritz of juice. This isn’t a clean cologne. The heart quickly swells with tuberose and jasmine, creamy and slightly indolic, while a powdery rose softens the edges. The transition is smooth, not jarring, and the base of musk, patchouli, and ambergris settles into a skin-hugging warmth that leans animalic and salty. The whole composition feels like a faded silk scarf left on a sun-warmed stone wall: floral, earthy, and faintly human.
Despite the name, this is not a traditional chypre with oakmoss. It is softer, more powdery and musky, with the patchouli playing a supporting rather than starring role. The scent feels natural and smooth, with a slight synthetic edge in the florals that keeps it from being truly niche level. It wears close. The longevity barely nudges past three hours, and the sillage is a whisper after the first hour. This is not a projector. It is a fragrance for close quarters, for leaning in.
Who should wear it? Someone who enjoys the contrast of bright florals against a warm, slightly dirty base. Skip it if you need performance or if sweet white florals give you a headache. Wear it on a cool spring morning to the office, or on an early fall evening when you want to feel polished but not loud. It is a gentle, refined companion, not a statement.
