Our take

Man Amber by Halston opens with a surprising snap of thyme and geranium, green and slightly dusty, before bergamot cuts through with a citrus brightness that never quite sweetens. Within minutes the heart blooms into a dense, resinous amber, myrrh adding a medicinal tint and French labdanum dragging the whole thing into leathery warmth. This is no shy oriental. The drydown is where it stakes its claim: a blunt puff of agarwood, not the skanky barnyard kind but a clean, almost metallic oud, braced by Virginia cedar’s pencil shavings and a polite musk. The overall character feels like a well worn leather journal left open on a radiator, the pages curling with heat and old incense smoke. It is unabashedly synthetic in that early 2010s designer way, but the composition is coherent, a mainstream amber built for impact rather than nuance. Longevity is adequate, around four to five hours, and sillage hovers close to the skin after the first hour, which is a shame because the opening deserves more air. This suits a man who wants a confident, slightly austere warmth for crisp autumn evenings or cold winter nights; it works better after dark, its powdery undertone turning intimate. Skip it if you prefer airy citruses or photorealistic natural ambers. Wear it to a dim bar where your coat stays on, and let the drydown do the talking.
