Our take

La Collection M7 Oud Absolu opens with a flash of mandarin orange, bright and almost sticky sweet, but it’s a fleeting spark before the dark mass moves in. Patchouli rises quickly, earthy and slightly medicinal, wrapping around a core of agarwood that feels less like raw smoke and more like polished, resinous antiquity. Myrrh and French labdanum lock everything into a rich, ambered leather that hums with warmth. The whole thing sits close to the skin like a beat-up leather journal stuffed with dried herbs, its pages yellowing and fragrant with dust and time.

It’s a heavy, balsamic scent, undeniably sweet but never cloying, with a dirt-caked naturalness that keeps it from feeling like designer candy. The longevity is respectable for a modern release, around six to seven hours, but the sillage is polite, almost shy, which is both its strength and its weakness it demands you lean in to smell it, and if you expect a room-filling oud monster, you’ll be disappointed. This is a fragrance for autumn evenings and winter nights, for the man who wants his scent to be a private cocoon rather than a broadcast. Skip it if you crave projection or fresh air but if you appreciate a quietly opulent, tar-sweet darkness, this is your smoke-stained wool coat in December.
