Fantasque
Fragrance notes
Character
Fantasque opens with a slap of aldehydes that could strip varnish, but the pear and rosewood swoop in to soften the blow, turning that metallic edge into something almost juicy. The green notes and spices keep it lively, not shrill. As it settles, the heart is a powdery orris and ylang-ylang bloom, the jasmine and lily of the valley playing demure backup singers, never screaming for attention. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its chypre bones: a mossy, woody base of oakmoss, sandalwood, and vetiver that feels like crumbling a dried flower petal into damp earth.
The overall character is a vintage silk scarf tossed over a tweed blazer, scent of a 1980s woman who knows her way around a boardroom and a garden party. It feels slightly synthetic in that aldehydic way, but deliberately so, like a carefully constructed artifact rather than a happy accident. With longevity barely touching three and a half hours and sillage that sits close after the first twenty minutes, Fantasque is a polite ghost of itself. That is its weakness, you will need to reapply.
This is for the person who loves classic floral chypres but wants something less aggressive than a Mitsouko. Skip it if you crave beast mode projection or find powdery white florals cloying. Wear it for a crisp autumn afternoon tea, a spring workday, or a winter evening where you want to smell intentional rather than loud. It leans heavily toward daytime, a quiet confidence that does not need to announce itself.
