This is a fragrance that announces itself with a heavy, golden swing. The opening is a punch of preserved plums and blood mandarin, sticky and almost jammy, before Christine Nagel’s floral heart rushes in: ylang ylang, jasmine, and a powdery white peach that feels more candied than fresh. The Turkish rose gets buried under the fruit, which is a shame. But the base is where Mauboussin truly settles into its skin: a dense patchouli and benzoin cloud, sweetened by vanilla and sandalwood, with amber and cedar adding a dusty, balsamic warmth. It’s less a chypre and more a gourmand-adjacent oriental, heavy as a velvet curtain in a room with no windows.
One vivid image: this is the scent of a woman digging through a rhinestone-studded handbag at a late November charity gala, her lipstick smudged, her laugh too loud. It feels opulent, borderline synthetic, and unmistakably mainstream in its ambition. The longevity is decent—it hangs around for a workday—but the sillage is modest, closer to a whisper than a shout once the first hour passes. Who should wear it? Someone who loves sticky-sweet amber bombs and doesn’t mind a fruit compote that verges on syrupy. Who should skip it? Anyone who prefers airy florals or crisp citrus, or who finds overripe plum cloying. Best for cold autumn nights, paired with a turtleneck and a glass of something fortified. Could it ever feel fresh? Not even a little.
