Signature X opens with a bright, prickly spray of lemon and bergamot that immediately meets the bite of pink pepper and the gentle heat of nutmeg. The citrus is loud and clear, but the spices give it a rough edge that keeps the start from feeling like a standard shower gel. Cardamom and juniper arrive quickly in the heart, adding a cool, resinous greenness that twists around the saffron. That saffron brings a dry, leathery warmth that begins to pull the fragrance away from its fresh opening and into something much heavier.
The base is a dense, sprawling collection of wood and resin. Cedar and sandalwood provide a sturdy backbone, but the oud, myrrh, and incense push the scent into a dark, church-like atmosphere. Leather and amber add a rich, slightly dirty sweetness, while patchouli and vetiver ground the mix with an earthy, root-like texture. Oakmoss and musk soften the edges just enough to keep the massive list of ingredients from feeling completely chaotic.
This is a scent for a cold night in a heavy wool coat, walking past lit windows where the air is sharp and the streets are quiet. The sheer weight of the composition creates a bubble of warmth that fits perfectly against a dark sky. It feels expensive and old-fashioned, like a room filled with dark wood furniture and thick curtains.
With so many notes competing for attention, the blend sometimes loses its focus. The citrus top notes clash slightly with the powdery tonka and the aggressive oud, making the transition between the bright start and the heavy dry down feel rushed. It tries to be a crisp spice and a deep resin at the same time, and the result is occasionally muddled rather than complex.
