Freak by Illamasqua opens with a green, narcotic punch, opium poppy and belladonna tangled with bitter artemisia, a cocktail that feels less like perfume and more like a witch’s garden at midnight. The heart blooms with datura and night blooming cereus, their white petals swollen with a sweetness that borders on toxic, while hemlock adds a chilly, vegetal undertone. As it dries, the base pulls you into a smoke-wreathed church of incense, myrrh, and oud, the whole composition settling into a balsamic, ambered warmth that hums rather than shouts.

The overall character is that of a velvet bell jar holding a single, wilting moonflower, beautiful but slightly morbid. It feels natural in its raw herbal bite, but there’s a synthetic gloss to the white florals that keeps it from being truly dirty.
