The back patio is quiet after the sun has gone, the air cool enough that a sweater feels right. Someone strikes a match and the scent of clove drifts up first, dry and faintly peppery, followed quickly by lemon that is bright but not sharp. Sage and artemisia add a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps the opening from feeling like a simple citrus spray.
Lavender moves in soon after, its clean, soapy character softened by jasmine that smells creamy rather than heady. Labdanum adds a resinous weight that pulls the flowers toward something darker, so the heart feels more like a night air than a garden. The blend stays aromatic and herbal, never tipping fully into sweetness.
Patchouli and sandalwood anchor the base, earthy and smooth, while benzoin brings a warm amber glow that lingers on the skin and on the sleeves of a wool coat. The woods feel polished rather than raw, and the resin ties the spices to the florals without letting either side dominate the other.
