Our take

Maai opens with a startling blast of aldehydes that feel less like champagne and more like the sharp, metallic click of a vintage compact mirror snapping shut. The tuberose that follows is not the lush, dewy kind you find in a garden; it is waxy, tense, undeniably carnal. Antonio Gardoni builds a floral heart of jasmine and rose that never softens into romance — these blooms are bruised, overtaken by a thick, animalic undercurrent. As it dries down, the civet emerges from the shadows like a creature stirring in old upholstery, backed by dark resins and a musk that clings to wool and skin for hours. The longevity is remarkable, easily eight hours, though sillage stays close enough that this fragrance becomes a private weapon rather than a broadcast.

The whole affair feels like a dusty satin opera glove pulled from a trunk in a forgotten manor: heavy, powdered, a little feral. It is emphatically niche, not sweet or fresh, but dense and synthetic in the best possible sense — a raw homage to the perfumery of another century. This is a scent for someone who loves being slightly dangerous at the dinner table, who wants their presence felt before they speak. Skip it if you recoil from anything that smells alive, or if you need a fragrance to fade politely into the background. Wear Maai on a cold autumn night, to a formal gathering or an intimate theater show, where the chill air amplifies its resinous fur and the aldehydes catch the light like a diamond with a crack in it. Is there any other way?
