MEM by Bogue opens with a furious lavender assault, not one but four incarnations of the plant converging like a purple storm cloud laced with bitter grapefruit and the green snap of petitgrain. It is immediately dense, almost confrontational, yet somehow refined. This is no airy fougere; it is an Oriental fougere built by Antonio Gardoni with the precision of a watchmaker and the instincts of a medieval apothecary. The heart reveals itself slowly, malt and mint tangled with ylang-ylang and champaca, a sweet floral warmth that softens the lavender but never fully tames it. Then the base arrives, and the whole composition shifts into something feral. Civet, castoreum, ambergris and labdanum creep in like old woodsmoke and animal hide, turning the fragrance into a baroque tapestry where lavender threads are woven through musk and amber.

This is a heavy, natural-smelling beast, unapologetically niche, with a longevity that easily reaches eight hours and a sillage that hovers close enough to feel intimate but loud enough to leave a trail. It is sweet in the floral and vanilla notes, but that sweetness is constantly challenged by the dusty, salty, almost bitter animalics. Who should wear it? Someone who wants to smell like a lavender field that has been raked by a wild boar and left to ferment under autumn leaves.
