Our take

Dark Temptation opens with a sticky-sweet burst of cherry and pear, cut by ginger’s sharpness and a whisper of coriander that almost feels medicinal. That fruit punch quickly gets smothered by red pepper and sage, a green-tinged heat that tries to hide the dessert course coming. Then the base hits: dark chocolate, vanilla, whipped cream, amber, and patchouli, a cloying gourmand avalanche that smells like a chocolate lava cake abandoned in a high school locker room. It’s unmistakably synthetic, aggressively sweet, and wears its cheap thrill like a badge of honor.

Given a 4.05 rating from nearly 1,300 voters, this clearly works for someone, but the longevity of 2.56 and sillage of 2.53 tell the real story: it evaporates fast, leaving only a faint cocoa ghost on skin. It’s an Oriental Fougere in name only, really a boozy-vanilla confection with patchouli dust. Best saved for brisk fall nights (95%) and deep winter (100%), worn somewhere loud and crowded. It suits the guy who wants to smell edible before a party, not the one chasing compliments on a date. Who should skip it? Anyone who values subtlety, natural composition, or lasting power. But for a ten-dollar rush of dark chocolate and whipped cream, it’s a guilty pleasure that knows exactly what it is.
