Our take

Vanille Fleur opens with a ripe peach so juicy it almost fizzes on the skin, but the fizz is quickly smothered by a cloud of vanilla and powder. This is not a fresh fruit salad; it is a glazed peach tart left on a vanity tray, dusted with vintage face powder and framed by a bouquet of velvety rose and generic white florals. Jean-Claude Astier steers the composition squarely into soft, sweet territory, where the vanilla acts less like a gourmand anchor and more like a plush bed for the florals to lounge on. The dry down turns powdery in the way a satin sachet does, gently sweet and thoroughly feminine, but it stays close to the skin. With a longevity hovering just above average and a sillage that barely nudges past arm’s length, Vanille Fleur feels like a polite, well mannered guest rather than a life of the party. It wears like a cashmere wrap sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar, cozy and a little safe. This makes it perfect for daytime wear across all seasons, especially under a winter coat or on a mild spring afternoon. Anyone who craves a soft, vanilla floral with no sharp edges will find a friend here. But if you want a scent that announces itself before you enter a room, or one that refuses to fade by lunch, skip this. How many more demure vanillas do we really need?
