Our take

You want your white flowers to roar, not whisper. Casablanca Lily 2019 opens with a fuzzy, jammy gardenia and a plum so ripe it’s practically bruised, but the sweetness is immediately cut by a peppery carnation and a creamy Indian tuberose that smells like a funeral corsage left in a hot car. The base of honey and palisander rosewood turns everything slightly syrupy and animalic, a lactonic blur that clings to the skin like a sweaty satin glove. The overall character is best captured by a single image: a wilting lily floating in a half-empty glass of warm milk, still cloying, still beautiful, but past its prime.

This is a dense, sweet floral that walks the line between natural and synthetic, feeling more niche in ambition than in execution. The sillage is a shy 2.74, sitting close like a secret you’re too tired to share, and longevity stretches only to about three hours on average, which is a genuine disappointment for a floral this heavy. It works best in spring and fall, surprisingly strong in winter, but in summer it can turn into a sticky, honey-soaked mess. Who should wear it? The person who loves tuberose but wants it softened, dimmed, made intimate. Who should skip? Anyone expecting the bombastic white floral of a classic like Carnal Flower, or anyone who resents reapplying perfume by lunch. Night or day, it feels like a quiet evening, a dress that demands to be touched up, a fragrance you fall for even as it fades.
