Our take

Catherine by Rasasi announces itself with a sharp, almost metallic slap of aldehydes and galbanum, a green-tinged brightness that feels like slicing into a just-picked lemon. The water hyacinth lends a dewy, aquatic shimmer, but it’s the grassy, herbal snap that dominates those first few moments. Then the florals arrive: a cool, powdery iris tinged with the honeyed sweetness of jasmine and the clean, soapy clarity of lily-of-the-valley. The rose peeps through like a blush behind a veil, never fully committed. On the drydown, the aldehydic fizz fades into a mossy, cedar-laced base that borders on the antique, with musk adding a slightly furry warmth to the wood.

The overall impression is that of a vintage powder compact unearthed in a cedar-lined linen closet, dusted with dried flower petals and the faint ghost of lemon furniture polish. It is resolutely feminine and old-school, a floral aldehyde built in the classical French tradition, though executed with a slightly broader, more synthetic edge common to Middle Eastern interpretations of the genre. The longevity is decent, around four to five hours, but the sillage stays intimate, never projecting with force, which feels honest given the powdery, close-to-skin nature of the base.

This is a fragrance for someone who enjoys the prim, ladylike restraint of Chanel No. 19 or the grassy crispness of an early Diorella, but who wants a slightly more accessible price tag. It suits spring afternoons and cool fall mornings, but will feel cloying in high summer heat or suffocating in a cramped office. If you prefer modern gourmands, neon fruity florals, or anything with ambroxan, skip this entirely. There is nothing wrong with being a little dusty, a little dated, but be warned: Catherine demands you wear a blouse with a collar, not a hoodie.
