Oud Shamash opens with a boozy slap of rum and saffron, the pink pepper and cinnamon adding a hot, almost feral shimmer. Davana sweetens the edges without sanitizing them. The heart is where Bertrand Duchaufour’s signature grit shows: cypriol oil’s earthy, nutty smokiness cuts through a restrained rose, preventing any floral prettiness. On the drydown, this becomes a deep, resinous hug of Tolu balsam, labdanum, and a leathery oud that is more polished than barnyard, yet still raw enough to feel alive. The vanilla and musk creep in like dust motes settling on an old oak desk.
The overall character is a weathered leather armchair in a smoky library, warm and slightly dusty. It is unapologetically heavy, leaning sweet from the balsams and vanilla but anchored by earth and wood. This is not a freshie; it is a densely built Oriental that feels niche in its complexity but avoids being unwearable. The longevity is moderate at 3.63 which means it sits close to skin after a few hours, and the sillage is similarly restrained. You will get wafts rather than proclamations. That works for fall and winter days or evenings when you want to feel swaddled without announcing your presence. Skip this if you dislike oud or prefer clean, airy scents. But if a boozy, resinous, powdery leather sounds like your kind of mess, this is the one. 🌿
