Our take

Poet’s Potion opens with cognac and pink pepper, supported by elemi and basil. The cognac gives a rounded, slightly boozy tone that sits close to the pepper’s crisp heat. Elemi adds a resinous lift while basil brings a green, slightly herbal edge. The opening feels warm and-spiced rather than sharp, with the pepper leading and the cognac smoothing the edges.

The heart introduces tobacco and myrrh alongside black vanilla husk, Indian patchouli, and frankincense. Tobacco carries a dry, leafy character that pairs with the resinous weight of myrrh and frankincense. Black vanilla husk adds a dark sweetness that does not become sugary, while patchouli grounds the mix with an earthy depth. The aromatic and balsamic accords are clear here, with the resins and tobacco creating a dense, slightly smoky middle that feels steady rather than shifting.

The base rests on vanilla, birch, Cambodian oud, amber, and musk. Vanilla and amber reinforce the sweetness already present, while birch adds a leather-like dryness and oud contributes a deep, woody resonance. Musk softens the edges without lightening the overall weight. The full accord list shows through clearly by this stage, with woody, amber, sweet, warm spicy, tobacco, aromatic, balsamic, soft spicy, vanilla, and leather all present in the final drydown. The fragrance stays rich and resin-heavy throughout, with the birch and oud keeping the sweetness anchored in a dark, woody frame.
