Our take

Green notes and bergamot open When the Rain Stops with something crisp and a little bitter, like leaves right after a downpour. Pink pepper adds a faint prickle before the watery and rain accords take over, turning the whole thing damp and ozonic in a way that's genuinely unusual. It keeps to a middling pace on skin, gentle rather than tenacious, and it stays private, felt by the wearer far more than by anyone else nearby. Turkish rose and jasmine soften the aquatic edge in the heart, adding a touch of warmth to all that green and water.

Pine tree and moss deepen the drydown considerably, patchouli adding an earthy weight that grounds all the watery brightness above it. The whole composition stays green and slightly damp from start to finish.

Spring is unmistakably its season, when damp green mornings match the mood the whole fragrance is chasing, and summer holds up reasonably well too. Fall is where it loses its footing a little, the green and watery character reading as out of step once the leaves actually start falling. Fanny Bal built something unusually atmospheric here, the kind of scent that evokes standing outside after a storm as much as it evokes a bottled floral or citrus accord.
