Character
Arpège has been in continuous production since 1927, and the opening still carries real formality, a wall of aldehydes and lily-of-the-valley that reads as a powdered, considered introduction rather than a casual first note. Peach and honeysuckle soften the aldehydic sharpness just slightly, without making the top feel especially fruity or modern.
The heart is enormous, jasmine, ylang-ylang, rose, lily, geranium and camellia layered into a single dense floral bouquet, no one flower standing out on its own. Coriander threads a spicy, slightly citrus note through the middle, adding a sharp lift against all that floral density.
By the base, sandalwood, amber, vetiver, musk, benzoin, vanilla and patchouli build a dry, warm foundation, powdery and a little resinous, the kind of drydown that lingers on a scarf or coat long after the florals up top have gone.
Hold on skin is a real strength, easily surviving long past where a lighter floral would have faded completely, and the sillage stays a modest bubble even at its fullest, registering with whoever's close but never overwhelming. What's left by the end is dry, powdery and a little resinous, a full floral built layer upon layer, aldehydes and powder doing as much work as any single flower.
