The kitchen door stands open to a warm morning. Sunlight falls across the wooden table where a bowl of fresh basil sits beside a cup of dark coffee. Someone has crushed star anise into a small mortar, and the air fills with a clean, sharp lift that cuts through the heavy scent of tobacco leaves drying in a nearby basket.
