Our take

Silk Route by Amouroud opens with a sharp, aromatic crackle of star anise and clove, the ginger flickering like a wet match struck in a spice market. Bergamot offers a fleeting citrus tang before the heart pulls you deeper into a strange floral stew: immortelle’s syrupy curry, tuberose’s waxy indole, narcissus dusted with lavender. It is confusing at first, almost medicinal, but the base rescues the journey. Tonka and benzoin melt into a soft leather accord, while incense and oakmoss add a smoky, resinous anchor. The whole thing feels like a worn leather saddlebag left to soak overnight in a cup of mulled wine by a dying fire.

This is a heavy, sweetly balsamic oriental built for cold weather. It sits close to the skin after the first hour thanks to moderate sillage and respectable but not beastly longevity. The synthetic edge in the florals keeps it from feeling truly natural, but it lands firmly in niche territory: idiosyncratic, not crowd-pleasing. That anisic, medicinal immortelle can read like fenugreek or burnt sugar on some skins, so try before you buy.

Who should wear it? Someone who likes their sweetness darkened by smoke and spice, who wants to smell like a caravan stop at dusk. Skip it if you prefer clean citrus or fresh aquatics, or if you are sensitive to loud floral accords. Wear it in deep autumn or the dead of winter, at night, when you want a fragrance that wraps around you like a wool coat lined with incense. One spray is enough, maybe two if you crave intimacy.
