Our take

You get a cold blast of clary sage and citrus, a bright and almost metallic top that quickly falls away. Then the heart emerges: smoky olibanum, sticky elemi, a sharp pinch of cardamom, and the leathery whisper of styrax. This is not a perfume that rushes. It develops slowly, layer by layer, until the base reveals itself as a dense, almost dusty amber fortified with labdanum, a touch of vanilla, and patchouli. The overall character is like a resinous caravan crossing a frozen mountain pass at dusk, the air filled with incense smoke and the warmth of a dying fire.

It feels heavy and warm, but not cloying; the aromatic and fresh spicy notes keep it from becoming a syrupy mess. This is decidedly niche in its refusal to be an easy crowd pleaser. It is also surprisingly close to the skin, with longevity around three and a half hours and sillage that does not roar. That is its weakness, for a fragrance this rich, you want it to trail behind you like a shadow. But perhaps that intimacy is the point.

Wear this when the leaves have fallen and the first frost coats the ground. It belongs on cashmere, on cold mornings, on evenings spent reading by a fire. It will suit anyone who craves a contemplative, balsamic incense, but skip it if you expect a vanilla bomb or a loud, projecting beast. This is a quiet, ancient thing, more like a memory than a statement.
