Our take

Butterball opens like a warm bath bomb dissolving in a cloud of cocoa powder and sugar, with ylang-ylang swimming underneath like a golden oil slick. It is a floral fruity gourmand in theory, but the fruit is absent, and the floral is powdery, shy, almost embarrassed. Within minutes the chocolate fades to a dusty cocoa butter base, sweetened by vanilla and held together by clean, inexpensive musk. The overall character is a cashmere sweater worn to bed, soft and comforting but also faint, barely there, a memory of a scent rather than a statement. After an hour it sits close to the skin like a whisper you are not sure you heard. The longevity and sillage numbers are honest: you will reapply, and you will hug the bottle to your nose. This is not a compliment-getter or a night-out fragrance. It is a personal cocoon for winter afternoons when the air is dry and cold, or for spring evenings when you want something that will not announce itself before you do. Butterball is natural, simple, and synthetic in the way a Lush kitchen smells synthetic, which is to say cozy and a little cloying if oversprayed. It suits people who wear fragrance for themselves, who want a soft hug of chocolate and powder without demanding attention. Skip it if you want projection, or if your skin eats gourmand notes as quickly as mine does. Why does a fragrance this short-lived feel so worth hoarding anyway?
