Our take

Hothouse Flower opens with a brisk snap of green, like breaking a stem of fresh mint and cypress over a cup of cold green tea. The bergamot is barely a whisper, quickly swallowed by leaves and tea leaves that feel almost bitter in their intensity. Then the gardenia arrives, but it’s not the creamy, sun-drenched bloom you might expect. It’s a shy, rain-soaked gardenia wrapped in fig’s milky skin and galbanum’s resinous sting, with olibanum adding a quiet church-like incense that keeps the whole thing from tipping into full summer cheer.

The dry down is where the fragrance settles into its true character: a whisper of corn silk, dry and vegetal, over a soft musk and the faintest woody warmth from guaiac. It’s the smell of a glass terrarium left slightly ajar on a cool morning, the humid air escaping one petal at a time. This is a natural, niche green floral that feels more like a sketch than a finished painting. It’s lightly sweet but never heavy, crisp and aromatic, but with a lactonic softness that keeps it from being too sharp.

The numbers tell the honest story: longevity is modest, around three hours before it becomes a skin scent, and sillage is intimate. You won’t announce yourself, you’ll be discovered. Best worn in spring, preferably during a daytime walk on a moody, overcast afternoon. It suits someone who prefers their florals dry and meditative, not sun-drenched. Skip it if you crave projection or a rich, lasting bloom. Who wants a gardenia that barely whispers?
