Our take

In an era when department store counters were still dominated by big-shouldered powerhouses, Benetton's Colors de Man arrived wearing a floral tie and smelling like a weekend in the sun. It opens with a brisk lemon-lavender-coriander trio that feels less like a kitchen spice rack and more like a barbershop that accidentally spilled a jar of potpourri into the tonic water. The green leaves and bergamot keep things fresh enough to avoid turning into your grandfather's cologne, but the heart leans hard into a surprising floral mix – cypress and fir play the woodsy straight man to carnation, cyclamen, jasmine and rose. The dry down is where the 1988 Oriental classification earns its keep: vanilla, benzoin and coconut soften the cedar and patchouli into a lightly sweet, almost powdery amber blanket.

The overall impression is that of a dusty photo album found in a Milanese thrift store – faded, a little synthetic, but charming in its willingness to be unapologetically romantic. The longevity and sillage numbers are honest about its modesty: this is a close-wearing companion, not a room-filler. It suits the man who prefers a soft-spoken conversation to a shouted declaration, someone who wants a touch of old-school floral warmth without the oakmoss aggression. Skip it if you demand beast mode projection or if the thought of jasmine and coconut in a masculine fragrance makes you reach for your nearest vetiver. Best worn on a warm spring afternoon, collar unbuttoned, with no intention of impressing anyone but yourself. Is there any better reason to wear perfume?
