Our take

Arborist opens with a snap of resinous fir and spruce, the green so sharp it feels like walking into a cold mist of crushed needles. That initial bite is softened almost immediately by a warm, dusty saffron and a sticky honey note that clings to the skin like sap. The heart is where this fragrance finds its strange, compelling character: a damp, earthy lichen and papyrus accord, tangled with the rooty, medicinal hum of Himalayan spikenard and a faint floral sweetness from osmanthus and magnolia that never fully blooms. It’s as if someone left a jar of quince preserves open in a damp forest cabin, the fruit slowly absorbing moss and wood smoke.

The drydown settles into a leathery, balsamic amber, with labdanum and myrrh smoothing out the rough edges, but a whisper of malted grain and burdock root keeps it grounded, almost savory. The overall image is a pair of muddy boots left on a porch after a long day of pruning, the leather damp, the soles packed with forest duff. It feels natural and complex, leaning niche without being unwearable, though the sillage is notably close to the skin, a modest 2.77 out of 5. You have to lean in to catch its nuances, which is both its strength and its weakness.

This is a fragrance for someone who prefers their scents introspective and earthy, not a compliment grabber. Skip it if you want projection or a clean, soapy freshness. Wear it in cool weather, ideally a rainy spring afternoon or a crisp fall evening, when the damp air lets those woody balsamic notes breathe without turning cloying.
