Our take

Ingenium opens with a blast of cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, pimento and saffron, the bergamot adding a bright lift that keeps the spices from lying flat. The kitchen feels quiet, the windows fogged from the steam of a stovetop, and the air carries that dry heat as the spices settle into a heart of tobacco and incense. Damask rose and gardenia soften the smoke without turning it floral, while elemi resin adds a clear, resinous edge that feels polished rather than rough.

Luca Maffei built the base from balsam fir, guaiac wood, Virginia cedar, Haitian vetiver, Java vetiver oil, sandalwood and amber, a dense woodpile that stays close through a heavy sweater and a wool coat. The amber rounds the edges so the woods never turn sharp, and the fir brings a cool needle note that cuts the warmth just enough. It suits someone who likes a spicy entrance but wants the drydown to feel grounded and steady.

This is not a light office scent, nor is it something to reach for when the air is warm and open. It belongs to the first cold morning when the sidewalk is slick and the sky stays low, a fragrance that smells like standing near a woodstove with a cup of spiced tea in hand.
