Our take

Pierre Balmain presents Ébène as a dark, resinous composition built around myrrh and tobacco. The myrrh lends a thick, slightly medicinal stickiness that clings to the air. Tobacco adds a dry, leafy roughness that keeps the blend from feeling polished. Maurice Roucel signed this 2024 release, and his hand shows in the way the materials feel blended rather than stacked.

Vanilla sits quietly underneath, rounding the sharper edges without making the scent edible. Incense brings a grey, sooty quality that feels appropriate in a dim room with wood furniture and low light. The amber accord hums steadily beneath the smoke, giving the fragrance a heavy, golden warmth that suits a cold night outdoors.

Geranium tries to lift the weight, but the balsamic base remains dominant throughout. The scent stays firmly in one mood and never shifts, which can feel repetitive after a few hours. It is dense and unchanging, so anyone who prefers a fragrance that moves through distinct stages will find it limiting.
