A whiskey sour sits on a log next to a fire that has burned down to red coals. The drink is cold and sharp, but the raspberry in it is dark, leaning toward the bruised fruit at the bottom of the glass. As the steam from the cup mingles with the air, a ribbon of incense rises and settles into the wood smoke that already hangs in the space. The oud here is not a heavy slab of resin. It is a dry, aromatic thread that wraps around the fruit and the drink without overwhelming them. Vetiver adds a damp, earthy soil note that keeps the vanilla from becoming a sugar syrup, lending a dry anchor to the entire glass. The scent stays close to the person holding the cup, moving only when they shift their arms, and it lingers on a jacket sleeve long after the liquid is gone, present enough to notice when the hand passes near the face.
The vanilla warms the air around the collar, mixing with the remaining heat of the embers and the charred ends of the wood. It is a fragrance for a quiet night spent outside when the air is crisp enough to see breath, wrapped in a thick scarf with hands wrapped around a warm mug. The raspberry flickers in and out of focus, sometimes bright and then suddenly hidden by the spicy, balsamic weight of the heart.
