Our take

Rumba is a fruit bowl that got spiked with honey and left to ferment in a leather handbag. Jean-Claude Ellena, of all noses, launched this in 1989, and you can feel the decade’s shoulder pads in every molecule. It opens with a sticky, boozy plum and peach cocktail, basil cutting through the syrup with a green snap. Within minutes, the heart unleashes a floral tsunami: tuberose, gardenia, jasmine, and marigold, all drenched in honey, so dense you could almost chew it. The dry down is where the party gets messy. Oakmoss and leather wrestle with vanilla and tonka, while a dollop of styrax adds a smoky, animalic rumble that lingers for hours. Longevity is a strong four out of five, and sillage sits just under that, projecting a sweet, powdery cloud with a feral edge.

This is not a fragrance for the timid or the office. It’s a full dose of eighties maximalism, synthetic in the best way, like a fruitchouli on steroids. The perfect image is a silk dress stained with red wine and lipstick, left on a hotel room floor. Wear it to a winter night out, a jazz bar with velvet curtains, or when you want to be the most memorable person in the room. But skip it if you prefer clean linen or subtle whispers. Rumba demands attention, and it gets it, even if that attention sometimes comes with a raised eyebrow.
