The opening is loud and a little clumsy. The black cherry and raspberry arrive with a syrupy weight that feels almost sticky, while the pink pepper scratches at the surface in a way that distracts more than it sparkles. Composed by Mark Buxton, this Kai Porten release pushes its fruit to the front with little restraint, and the cognac only deepens the boozy density. It is a heavy hand at first, threatening to tip into something purely sugary before the rest of the room catches up.
The air in a dimly lit lounge is cool against the windows, and the heating hums low against the glass. Inside, the heart of Cherry X begins to shift. Carrot and bitter almond ground the rose, pulling it away from a pretty floral direction and steering it toward something earthy and dry. Cinnamon and nutmeg warm the space between the chairs, while osmanthus adds a soft apricot fuzz to the edges of the conversation happening in the corner.
Sandalwood smooths the sharper spices as the base settles into the carpet and the velvet curtains. Oud and frankincense bring a resinous smoke that wraps around the amber and tonka bean, and the vanilla feels dark rather than bright. Musk and patchouli sit low against the skin, while styrax adds a leathery depth that keeps the sweetness from floating upward into the rafters of the room.
A bowl of dark cherries sits on a mahogany table beside a half-empty glass of brandy, the fruit catching the low glow of a single lamp while the smoke from the incense curls into the shadowed ceiling.
