Our take

You smell the 1990s in the first spray: a sharp, herbal slap of lavender and rosemary over an almost jammy fruit note, all anchored by a leathery chypre chassis. Basala opens with the confidence of a man who doesn't ask permission. The nose behind it, Dominique Preyssas, built a green cathedral where clary sage and basil form the pews, and caraway and cinnamon drift through the air like incense during a high mass. But this church has a dark, humid crypt. The heart reveals a dusty rose and carnation, powdered and slightly sour, before the base sinks into a thick paste of labdanum, oakmoss, and coconut-tinged amber. It is not sweet; it is resinous and brooding, a leather jacket left in a damp forest overnight. The longevity is decent at 3.84, and the sillage moderate, which suits its introspective weight. This is a fragrance for the man who wants to smell like old money and older books, not the guy chasing compliments on a dance floor. Skip it if you prefer fresh ambroxan or sugary gourmands. Wear it on a crisp autumn evening, a heavy wool coat, and a whiskey in hand. It belongs to the cold seasons winter and fall, and it feels like the last leaf clinging to a branch before the snow.
